Management of dangerous goods not only plays a vital role in the chemical industry. Companies that further process the materials regulated by the dangerous goods legislation also have a duty to comply. And since these regulations increase exponentially, the number of companies affected quickly escalates. One of these is the long-established manufacturer of agricultural machinery John Deere. Jörn Fries from the company´s environment department explains: "When we send goods such as tractor engines and batteries by air freight, we must declare them as dangerous goods and handle them accordingly." To minimize the costs involved and ensure legal compliance, John Deere Deutschland controls its dangerous goods management using an SAP-based software solution that has been integrated in all the company´s processes.

Company

The John Deere factory in Mannheim is the company’s second-largest factory in the world and its largest production location outside the U.S. It employs a staff of 2,700 on an area covering 46 hectares. The factory caters for the mid-to-high range tractor market, including the 5000 and 6000 series and parts of the 7000 series. It uses the nearby River Rhine
to transport tractors and spare parts by barge to Rotterdam, where they are transshipped for oversea traffic. Rail and road are used to transport goods within Europe. Last but not least, the company also uses air freight.
